Intent

At Sandhills, our aim is for all our pupils to develop an interest in learning other languages in a fun and immersive way. We aim for our pupils to develop their understanding of cultural differences in other countries through their existing knowledge of British Values and through curriculum enrichment opportunities.

We aim to provide a curriculum that builds on our pupils’ understanding and enables children to practise their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills so that they can apply their learning in a range of contexts and be prepared for their future learning in KS3 and beyond.

Implementation

From Year 3, all pupils at Sandhills learn French during weekly lessons. We use Salut! to support our teaching of French and to develop pupils’ key language skills as set out in the National Curriculum.

Our French curriculum introduces our pupils to key vocabulary across a range of topics and build on understanding as pupils progress through the school. Children develop their language skills progressively by:

  • Learning key vocabulary for a range of topics

  • Acting out scenarios and other conversational opportunities

  • Learning songs

  • Playing games

Flashbacks and retrieval exercises form part of lessons to support children in retaining knowledge in the long-term. Pupil’s work is also recorded through images and written captions and/or sentences.
