Intent

At Sandhills, we seek to inspire a curiosity and fascination in children about the world around them.  Our curriculum aims to develop a meaningful understanding of place including how 'home' sits in a local, national and international context.  We teach about the physical and human factors that shape our world and develop an understanding of our responsibilities to look after our environment from both a local and global perspective.  As such, creation, community and place and compassion are threads that run through the content of our Geography curriculum.

We teach the skills of Geography in a carefully planned way and the Geography units ensure regular opportunities for fieldwork activities.

Implementation

We follow the National Curriculum and new EYFS framework for Geography to develop the skills and knowledge of Geography which are then transferred to other areas of the curriculum. Throughout the curriculum, pupils will investigate a range of places - from their local area, countries in the United Kingdom and beyond. These places are taught to help develop the pupils’ knowledge and understanding of the Earth’s physical and human processes.

Teachers will promote thinking and inspire pupils’ curiosity at Sandhills by planning challenging and stimulating lessons. Pupils will develop their knowledge and skills through small step learning, where lessons are carefully sequenced to build on knowledge and understanding in an exciting and engaging way. History lessons will be taught weekly.
