Intent

At Sandhills Community Primary School, it is our intent that all children will be taught the skills they need to become ‘lifelong learners’.  In PSHE the children will be taught to be happy with themselves, be confident and have the ability to develop their skills and understanding when having new experiences, meeting new challenges and finding themselves in unfamiliar situations. We teach the children to be resilient and to understand that they can make mistakes in order to learn.  We will explain equality and we will help children to understand and value how they and others are global citizens as well as important people within their local community.

Our PSHE lessons are planned to help our pupils to recognise our values in action, helping them to feel prepared for the next stage of their education and beyond.  We welcome our duties under the Equality Act 2010 to eliminate discrimination, advance equality of opportunity and foster good relations in relation to age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race and ethnicity, religion or belief, sex and sexual orientation.

Implementation

PSHE at Sandhills is implemented using the JIGSAW programme. The Jigsaw programme states on its website:  “With strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health, Jigsaw 3-11 properly equips schools to deliver engaging and relevant PSHE within a whole-school approach. Jigsaw lessons also include mindfulness allowing children to advance their emotional awareness, concentration and focus.” Jigsaw 3-11 offers a comprehensive Programme for Primary PSHE including statutory Relationships and Health Education, in a spiral, progressive and fully planned scheme of work, giving children relevant learning experiences to help them navigate their world and to develop positive relationships with themselves and others.

Jigsaw consists of six half-term units of work (Puzzles), each containing six lessons (Pieces) covering each academic year:

  • Term 1: Being Me in My World

  • Term 2: Celebrating Difference (including anti-bullying)

  • Term 3: Dreams and Goals

  • Term 4: Healthy Me

  • Term 5: Relationships

  • Term 6: Changing Me (including Sex Education)

Puzzles are launched with a whole-school assembly with each year group studying the same unit at the same time (at their own level), building sequentially through the school year, facilitating whole-school learning themes. Puzzles and pieces are also linked each unit to our school values: Respect, Relationships, Responsibility, Resilience which we also build on in our weekly assemblies.

PSHE in EYFS

At the end of each lesson the children are encouraged to reflect on their learning and share their thoughts and feelings about what they have discussed.

In Reception, The ‘PSHE’ aspect of the curriculum is followed mainly through the area 'Personal, Social and Emotional Development' but also 'Communication and Language' and 'Understanding the World'.
