Intent

At Sandhills we recognise the profound impact music can have on a child’s development and well-being. Our music curriculum is designed to inspire a love of music, foster creativity, and cultivate an appreciation for a wide range of musical traditions. Guided by the Charanga scheme, our intent is to provide a high-quality music education that enables all children to develop their musical abilities and confidence. We aim to create an inclusive environment where every student has the opportunity to participate in musical activities, whether through classroom learning, extra-curricular clubs, or performances.

Implementation

Our music curriculum is implemented through the Charanga scheme, which aligns with the National Curriculum for music. Charanga provides a structured approach to teaching music, encompassing listening, performing, composing, and appraising. Each lesson is designed to be interactive and hands-on, ensuring that children are actively involved in their learning.

In addition to classroom music lessons, we offer a range of extra-curricular activities to enhance our students' musical experiences. These include:

  • Choir: Our school choir meets regularly to practise and perform at school events and community gatherings.

  • Instrumental Lessons: We provide specialised lessons in brass, woodwind, piano, and guitar, taught by experienced musicians.

  • Mass Choir Events: Our school participates in a range of community events such as  the Big Sing, where Sandhills joins other schools to perform in large-scale choral concerts.

Shows and Performances: Throughout the year, we organise various musical shows and performances, giving students the opportunity to showcase their talents.
